Misconception 1: The primary aim of Chinese workers is to work hard and get rich. The surveyors found that the number of respondents who adopted a capitalistic view to work and life (“work hard and get rich”) dropped significantly between 1994 and 2004, by 15 percentage points. Rather, what has grown in lockstep with the country’s economic surge and its rising standard of living has been the proportion of people saying that their personal goals are self-satisfaction and self-expression.
